Two Security Vulnerabilities in the Java Runtime Environment With Decoding DER Encoded Data and Parsing HTTP Headers may Result in a Denial of Service (DoS)

04 november, 2009

Category : Security
Release Phase : Resolved
Bug Id : 6864911
Product : Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE)
Date of Resolved Release : 03-Nov-2009

Two security vulnerabilities in the Java Runtime Environment with decoding DER encoded data and parsing HTTP headers:

1. Impact

Two vulnerabilities in the Java Runtime Environment with decoding DER encoded data and parsing HTTP headers may separately allow a remote client to cause the JRE on the server to run out of memory, resulting in a DoS (Denial of Service) condition.

Sun acknowledges with thanks, BFK edv-consulting GmbH, for bringing the first issue to our attention.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

Java SE for Windows, Solaris, and Linux:
  • JDK and JRE 6 Update 16 and earlier
  • JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 21 and earlier
Java SE for Solaris:
  • SDK and JRE 1.4.2_23 and earlier
Java SE for Windows:
  • SDK and JRE 1.3.1_26 and earlier
Java SE for Business for Windows, Solaris and Linux:
  • JDK and JRE 6 Update 16 and earlier
  • JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 21 and earlier
  • SDK and JRE 1.4.2_23 and earlier
To determine the version of Java installed on a system, the following command can be used:

    % java -version
java version 1.5.0_17

3. Symptoms

There are no reliable symptoms that would indicate the described issue has been exploited.

4. Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue.  Please see the Resolution section below.
